Emerging Professionals Committee

The Emerging Professionals Committee includes both Young Architects and Architectural Interns. These young professionals are the future leadership of the AIA. Recognizing this, the AIA College of Fellows has created this special category within the AIA to promote professional growth and leadership development. Acting as a collective voice for young architects nationwide, the Emerging Professionals Group is focused on issues uniquely relevant to young architects, including starting a firm, advancing within an existing firm (leadership/early career development), career alternatives (both within and beyond traditional practice), and balancing professional and personal life.

AIA Asheville envisions that the Emerging Professionals will lead the way into the future for our organization by establishing young, ambitious leaders in our architectural community.

Committee Chair: Thad Rhoden

CANstruction is a design/build competition currently held in cities throughout North America. Teams of architects, engineers, and students mentored by these professionals, compete to design and build giant structures made entirely from full cans of food. Once the competition is complete, the canned goods are donated to a local food bank to help feed hungry families. More information can be found at www.canstruction.org .

The Young Architects FORUM is organizing the 3rd Annual CANstruction Asheville Competition. The build out day is set for October 31,2010 at Pack Place in downtown Asheville. All handmade can-structures will be on display for an entire week before being donated to MANNA FoodBank. Teams will be comprised of students in grade 6-12 and led by design professionals. If interested in participating or sponsoring, please contact forum@yafasheville.org. For more information, please go to www.yafasheville.org

There are various ways one can participate in the event. Team leaders in the design/engineering field are needed to mentor and run student teams. These team leaders will teach students about design/build and guide them in their efforts to build the structure. Sponsors are a crucial part of the event because specific cans will need to be purchased to create the structures. If you are interested in participating or would like to find out more information please contact Lindsey Rhoden, CANstruction 2009 Chair, at lindseyr@pbclarchitecture.com.
